Wooden windows, made to measure
Wood gives a house a warmth that aluminium and PVC cannot quite match. It suits old town houses, classic villas and homes where the look comes first. Wooden windows are always made to measure for your openings, and on the coast they need periodic maintenance. If you are happy with that, wood is a very good option.
When to choose wood
Wood is a good fit if:
- the character of the house matters, for example in an old town house or a classic villa;
- you want a natural material with a warm look;
- you value natural insulation;
- you accept that the finish needs attention from time to time.
Wood in sun and sea air
Sun and UV
Direct sun dries out the finish and fades the colour, especially on south- and west-facing sides. Those windows need attention sooner than windows in the shade.
Salt air and humidity
Salt and moisture find any weak spot in the finish. Wood near the sea needs a good coating and regular checks, so that small damage is repaired before water gets in.
Insulation and noise
Wood insulates naturally. With good glass and seals, wooden windows perform well against heat and noise.
Large openings
Wood can be used for larger windows and doors, but the frames are usually wider than aluminium. For very wide sliding doors, aluminium is often the more practical choice.
Finish and coating
Wooden windows are protected by their finish: either a paint system that covers the wood, or a stain or oil that keeps the grain visible. On the coast, a finish that lets the wood breathe while keeping water out works best. Colour matters too: lighter shades generally last longer in full sun than dark ones.
At the survey we explain the options and tell you honestly what maintenance to expect for your house.
Maintenance
Plan on periodic maintenance. Clean the frames a few times a year, check the finish every year, particularly at the bottom of the frame and on the sunny sides, and touch up small damage straight away. Every few years, depending on sun and exposure, the windows need a fresh coat. Done regularly, this keeps wooden windows in good condition for a long time.
Typical use on the Costa Blanca
Wood fits naturally in the older houses of the historic centres of Jávea and Dénia, and in classic villas with wooden shutters and beams. Some owners choose wood on the street side, where character counts, and another material on the sea side, where exposure is greatest.
What you can expect
We measure every opening and discuss the type of wood, the profile, the glass and the finish with you. You receive a clear quote in writing; once you agree, we ask for a deposit and the windows are made to measure, delivered to your home and installed by our fitters.
Prices for wooden windows depend heavily on those choices, so we give them after measuring. See the prices page, or compare with aluminium and PVC.
Frequently asked questions
How often do wooden windows need maintenance near the sea?
It depends on sun, wind and how close you are to the sea. Check the finish every year and plan on a fresh coat every few years; sunny, sea-facing sides need it soonest.
Are wooden windows a good idea in a coastal climate?
Yes, as long as you accept the maintenance. With a good finish and regular care, wood performs well. If you want as little maintenance as possible, aluminium or PVC is a better fit.
Can new wooden windows keep the style of the old ones?
Because wooden windows are made to measure, the existing style can be taken into account. We look at the details together during the survey.
What does a wooden window cost?
We price wood after measuring, because the type of wood, the profile, the glass and the finish make a big difference. The prices page explains what affects the cost.
